Abstract

Background

Bactrim is a trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, which is effective in the treatment of patients with a variety of infections in different settings. It is associated with a lower incidence of adverse effects than trimethoprim (e.g., pneumonia, skin, blood, bone), and is also associated with a greater risk of bleeding. In fact, it is not known if it is safe to use in combination with other antibacterials in patients undergoing treatment of an infection that is resistant to all antibacterial agents.

Objective

This is a case-control study of patients admitted to a tertiary hospital for a complicated urinary tract infection (CUTI) complicated by severe bacteraemia. The patients were randomized to receive either bactrim (n = 28) or trimethoprim (n = 28) for seven days. In this case-control study, the patients were divided into two groups. In the group receiving trimethoprim (n = 28), patients in the bactrim group experienced a median of 14 days for urinary tract infection, and in the trimethoprim group, a median of 6 days for infection. In the group receiving bactrim, the median of days for urinary tract infection and infection was 9 days for bacterial meningitis and 4 days for bacterial skin, while the median of days for infection and infection was 8 days for bacterial meningitis and 3 days for bacterial skin. The median of days for bacterial meningitis and bacterial skin were 9 days for trimethoprim, and 8 days for trimethoprim. Patients in the bactrim group also experienced a median of 4 days for urinary tract infection, and 4 days for bacterial meningitis, and the median of days for bacterial skin was 7 days for trimethoprim, while the median of days for infection and infection was 2 days for trimethoprim. The median of days for urinary tract infection and infection was 10 days for trimethoprim, and 4 days for trimethoprim, and the median of days for bacterial meningitis and infection was 8 days for trimethoprim, and the median of days for bacterial skin was 8 days for trimethoprim. The median of days for bacterial meningitis and bacterial skin were 2 days for trimethoprim, and the median of days for trimethoprim, and the median of days for bacterial meningitis and infection was 5 days for trimethoprim. A total of 7 patients had a bacterial meningitis, while 3 patients had a bacterial skin infection. The authors concluded that trimethoprim is effective in the treatment of complicated UTI caused by bacterial meningitis. They also noted that trimethoprim is less likely to cause bleeding in patients who are also treated with an antibiotic.

Introduction

Bactrim, a trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, is a commonly prescribed antibiotic in both the United Kingdom and the United States. The most commonly used antibiotics for infections in the UK are tetracyclines (including Cipro, doxycycline, and Minipress), and trimethoprim, a broad-spectrum antibiotic, is one of the most commonly prescribed in the UK. The risk of bleeding in patients receiving trimethoprim is higher with trimethoprim than with bactrim, which is known to be associated with a greater risk of bleeding than trimethoprim alone. However, it is not clear whether this risk is associated with bacterial infections in the UTI patient population, or whether it is associated with a lower incidence of bleeding. This study examined the incidence of bleeding in patients who received trimethoprim for an uncomplicated UTI and the incidence of bleeding in patients who received bactrim for an uncomplicated UTI. In the current analysis, we reviewed data on the incidence of bleeding in patients who received trimethoprim for a complicated UTI and the incidence of bleeding in patients who received trimethoprim for an uncomplicated UTI. We also examined the risk of bleeding in patients who received trimethoprim for an uncomplicated UTI.

Methods

The study was reviewed and approved by the UK Clinical Research Ethics Committee (REC reference number: 7/B/12). Patients with a history of bleeding in the urinary tract were excluded. Patients who were in the first or second half of their hospital stay for more than one year were also excluded. All patients were initially assessed at the beginning of the study and followed up for an additional seven days.

Bactrim is a combination of two medications: trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole. Each tablet of Bactrim contains sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim. Bactrim is used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. It is also used to prevent or treat certain types of blood and lymphatic system disorders.

How Does Bactrim Work?Bactrim works by stopping the growth of bacteria. This stops the bacteria from becoming resistant to antibiotics. Bactrim can also help treat urinary tract infections, which are caused by bacteria in the bladder. This medication may be used to treat urinary tract infections.
